Rubrics

NOTE: If you don’t see certain tools in your course Navbar, you can find them by clicking on the Course Admin tab.

Create and Edit a Rubric (Written Instructions) 
  • From the organizational homepage, select the desired course using the My Courses widget or the Course Selector icon at the top right of the page. 
  • From your course level Navbar, select the Course Tools drop-down menu to access the Rubrics tool. 
  • From the Rubrics Tool, click New Rubric. 
  • Provide a name for the Rubric 
  • Choose the desired Rubric Type and Scoring. 
  • There are two types of rubrics, analytic and holistic. The Analytic Rubric Type provides the ability to add multiple criteria within a rubric. 
  • The Holistic Rubric Type provides a single criterion. Holistic Rubrics can also be assessed with percentage scores that are set per each rubric level. 
  • To set the Scoring Type:
  • The default Scoring Type of Points results in each rubric level having the same score for each criterion. 
  • No point values are set when the Scoring Type is set to No Score. 
  • The custom point Scoring Type provides the ability to set unique point values for each level per criterion. 
  • Continue on to enter the Criterion Name 
  • Adjust the Rubric levels and adjust the Point Values. 
  • Optionally, additional Rubric levels can be added by clicking the Plus button and additional criterion can be added by clicking Add Criterion. 
  • Click the remove level button to delete rubric levels. 
  • Add a Description for each achievement level if applicable and add initial feedback that is to be applied when assessing learner work. 
  • Click the Add Criterion Group button to add additional criterion groups in order to create multipart Rubrics. 
  • Adjust the overall score parameters to define the overall level and score that will be assigned to the Learner. 
  • Set the Rubric options that include: 
    • Rubric Visibility 
    • Score Visibility 
    • Description 
    • Advanced Availability 
  • Click Close to finish creating your Rubric. 
  • Edit a rubric by choosing Edit within the drop-down menu beside the desired Rubric name. 
  • NOTE: Rubrics that have been used to assess learner work cannot be edited. Use Copy to create and edit a new version of the rubric. 

Create an Analytic Rubric (Written Instructions) 

Create an Analytic Rubric when you want to evaluate learners based on multiple criteria.

  • To Create an Analytic Rubric: click New Rubric from New Rubrics.
  • Enter a name for your rubric 
  • NOTE: Rubrics autosaves your changes. 
  • With Rubric Type set as Analytic, select your scoring method. Scoring methods include: 
    • No Score 
    • Points 
    • Custom Points. 
  • Custom Points rubrics can be used to create weighted rubrics. 
  • You can reverse the level order of the rubric, add new levels before or after the existing levels using Add new level before or Add new level after, respectively, at any time. Remove levels using Remove level. 
  • Criteria can be rearranged by using the handles to drag and drop the criterion into the new location. 
  • Remove criterion you are no longer using with Remove Criterion. 
  • Use Add Criterion to add new criteria to the rubric. 
  • Begin filling in your rubric. 
  • Click the criterion text box to edit your rubric. 
  • Update the level names and values. 
  • Add the criteria and level details to tell learners how the rubric will be applied to their work. 
  • If desired, you can include feedback that will be displayed to learners when they review the rubric. 
  • Navigate to Overall Score. 
  • Add details into the Overall Score feedback. 
  • Click Options to update rubric visibility. 
  • Select Hide scores from students, to hide points value if you use a different grade scheme. 
  • Enter a description for the rubric for your personal reference. 
  • Click Close

Create a Holistic Rubric (Written Instructions) 

Create and use holistic rubrics to evaluate learners based on a single criterion. 

  • To create a Holistic Rubric, click New Rubric from Rubrics. 
  • Enter a name for your rubric.  Note: Rubrics autosaves your changes. 
  • To make your rubric holistic, click the Rubric Type menu and select Holistic. 
  • Select your scoring method from the following: 
    • No Score 
    • Percentages. 
  • You can reverse the order in which the levels display, add new levels using Add new level before or Add new level after, respectively, at any time. 
  • Click Delete level to delete a level. 
  • Edit the level titles. 
  •  Update the level percentages, and add details to inform learners how to achieve each level of the rubric. 
  • Update the Rubric Visibility, if necessary. 
  • Select Hide scores from students, to hide students’ points value if you use a different grade scheme. 
  • Enter a description for the rubric for your personal reference. 
  • When you are ready, click Close. 

Create a Weighted Rubric (Written Instructions) 

Emphasize the assessment of specific criterion by creating a weighted rubric. 

  • To Create a Weighted Rubric, click New Rubric from Rubrics. 
  • Enter a name. NOTE: Rubrics autosaves your changes. 
  • To create a weighted rubric, change the scoring method to Custom Points. Click Scoring and select Custom Points. 
  • Navigate to customize levels and criterion. Next, customize levels and criterion by clicking it. 
  • NOTE: Weighted rubrics should be aligned to the total score of the assignment, or weighted out of 100. 
  • Assign total values to each Criterion. 
  • Customize the points for each level and add Initial Feedback if desired. 
  • Navigate to Add Criterion. 
  • When you are ready, click Close.
